Golf tournaments fill Rochester's summer schedule By Jim Krencik Golf season has hit Rochester, and it won’t just be the duffers, slicers and shankers on the courses this summer. The American Junior Golf Association will be coming to the area this weekend, with the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rochester presented by Wegmans LPGA and Xerox Classic. The Country Club of Mendon is the host facility for the tournament, which is held specifically for first-time members of the AJGA and AJGA members who haven’t participated in an event this season. Twenty-nine players from New York will start their seasons and careers at the event, which is a 26-hole stroke play tournament. One-hundred golfers will be competing, with 16 states and both Canada and Mexico represented. AJGA alumni include professionals Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Paula Creamer and Brittany Lincicome, so the amateurs competing nearby now could easily be the ones we’ll cheer for at the major tournaments in a few years. Golf fans will get to see future champions and past champions this summer, as the Champions Tour’s Senior PGA Championship will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester May 19 through 25. The major tournament rotates its location across the nation, but the field is consistently strong. Eleven former Ryder Cup captains, 12 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame and nine former PGA Champions will be tee-ing it up at the event. The arrival of the tournament makes Oak Hill the first golf course to host The Ryder Cup, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open Championship, U.S. Amateur and Senior PGA. The LPGA Tour will be making its annual stop in Rochester in June, as the Wegmans LPGA comes back to Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford. One-hundred-thousand spectators came to the tournament in 2007 to see Lorena Ochoa win her second career Wegmans LPGA Tournament. The Wegmans LPGA Tournament will be a vital tournament, as the U.S. Women’s Open is the following week. Players will be looking to hone their game for the major, so it should be a showing of golf’s top talent. In August, the Nationwide Tour will make its stop in Irondequoit for the Xerox Classic. The Irondequoit Country Club will be hosting the tournament August 11 through 17. The Nationwide Tour is a step below the PGA Tour, meaning that the golfers who come to the Xerox Classic will be looking to advance their careers with a good showing. |
