Eagles win both championships at States By Amanda Seef The outdoor track and field teams competed in the New York State Cross Country and Track & Field Conference (NYSCTC) championship, May 3 at the University of Rochester. Both the men and women’s teams took the title of state champions as they performed better than RIT, St. Lawrence, Ithaca, Cortland and 10 other schools. Coach Mark Krueger was also named the men and women’s Coach of the Year. Amanda Elias helped set three school records with her victories in the 800-meter dash, as well as the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Elias’ time in the 800 was a new record for the school, with a time of 2:14.65. She was also the last leg of the 4x400 relay that won with a time of 3:54.06. Elias was joined on the 400 relay by Randi Deboy, Christine Reamer and Shannon O’Keeffe. Also on the women’s side, the 4x100 meter relay took second, with a team of Melissa Scorse, Nicole Mosman, Nicole Sosnoski and Jenny Ruhlman. O’Keeffe placed second in the 100-meter hurdles,with a time of 15.51. Kelsey Conn conquered the 5,000-meter run, beating her competition by more than 15 seconds. Deboy also took third in the 400-meter dash. Scorse and Ruhlman clinched fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively, in the 100-meter dash, coming within .2 seconds of each other For the field events, Bridget Mayne took second in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.94 meters. She was joined by Morgan Sullivan less than three and a half meters behind. O’Keeffe took first in the triple jump, leaving a trail of broken school records behind her. Ashley Mrozek took third overall in the heptathlon, placing second in the long jump and fifth in the shotput out of the competitors for the seven total events. In total, the women’s team accrued 139.5 points, edging out University of Rochester and St. Lawrence by more than 15 points. On the men’s side, Josh Dupuis continued his domination of the shotput and discus throw. Dupuis blasted the competition on the discus throw by more than four feet, but was followed in the results by Ray Lund. Dupuis was named Field Athlete of the Meet. Also in the field, Dom Gonzalez took first place in the hammer throw, joined by Matt Hand and Greg Parizek in sixth and seventh place. Andrew Smith took third place in the triple jump and Brandon Lindsay took fourth in the long jump. Chris Brhel took first in the pole vault, tying at the same height with James Kennedy and a Cortland athlete. On the track, Charlie Higgins took fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Pete Manktelow took third on the 1,500-meter run, with Steve Reiss taking third in the 400-meter dash. Jeremy George took sixth in the same event. The 4x400 meter relay placed third, with the team of Gonzalez, Jeff Suhr, George and Rusty Landon. The 4x100 meter relay also took third, with the team of Suhr, George, Lindsay and Cevon Carver. James Kennedy took fifth overall in the decathlon with Carver placing seventh. Carver took second and Kennedy took sixth in the 100-meter dash, of the 10 event series. For the long jump, Kennedy took third and Carver took fifth. The shotput registered a second and fifth-page finish for Kennedy and Carver. Kennedy and Carver were ousted by more than seven feet in the discus throw, but were able to finish in second and third place, respectively, with throws within one foot of each other. Kennedy dominated the pole vault division, registering .4 meters above the competition. Finally, Kennedy took third in the javelin throw, with Carver following in fifth. Krueger’s Coach of the Year honor follows the same achievement for the outdoor track and field in 2005. He was recognized by the NCAA last season as the DIII Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. |
