Eagles get revenge on Buffalo State; Cortland wins title

Lexie Goodhart concluded a wild burst of play with a shot that tied the game at 13 all with just 47 seconds left, but the College at Brockport women’s lacrosse team could not keep Cortland from scoring the decider less than half of a minute later, ending what had been a successful stretch of revenge at the SUNYAC Playoffs for the best team in Brockport history.

“It’s nice to be so close,” said Brockport head coach Traci Lian after the game. “But it hurts so much to lose by one.”

The championship game, played at Cortland, was a back-and-forth game that tested both teams’ defenses throughout. Brockport was led by Julia Decker, who scored a hat-trick, and Goodhart, who helped stage multiple comebacks with bullet-fast shots.

The Golden Eagles never led in the second half, but Cortland could not pull away. The furthest the Red Dragons got from Brockport was a 13-11 lead with five minutes left, but Jenny Baccile scored with 3:48 left in the game to shrink the difference to just one goal.

Lian said her team did all that she asked from them against the No. 19 ranked team in Division-III.

“I told them to leave it all on the field and they did,” Lian said.

The two sides exchanged goals for 11 minutes, turning a tight 9-8 game into a tense 12-11 game.

Brockport started the game with the advantage in the center of the field, winning multiple draw controls that set up four straight goals coming between Cortland possessions. The Golden Eagles’ 5-1 lead was undone due to the Red Dragons returning the favor in both the circle and in the net, as Cortland scored the next five.

“We needed to win more draws and do a better job of controlling the midfield,” said Lian, who was impressed by the team’s play in other areas. “Our offense and defense were great.”

The Golden Eagles nearly won the title by using many of the same strategies that earned them a win in the semi-final game — a 17-12 win over the Buffalo State Bengals. While the Red Dragons were much more disciplined than Buffalo State, who committed 28 fouls in the first half and 49 overall, Brockport was able to break down both opponents’ defenses with a layered attack.

The Golden Eagles scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back. Decker led the way with seven points and Kim Morris (three goals and two assists) and Carrie Kane (two goals and three assists) added five points.

The Golden Eagles can still walk away with a postseason trophy despite the loss at SUNYACS. Brockport was named as the No. 1 seed and the host for the 2008 ECAC Upstate Tournament.

Brockport will face the winner of a play-in game between Utica and Medaille May 10 at 11 a.m. The winner will play in the championship game against the winner of the Vassar vs. St. John Fisher semi-final May 11 at noon.
