The race for the Congressional seat in the 26th district continues to have its twists and turns. Jon Powers recently gained more endorsements in the district that covers the eastern suburbs of Buffalo and spans to the western suburbs of Rochester.
The seat will be left open after Republican Tom Reynolds announced his retirement.
Powers has received endorsements from six out of seven county Democratic committees but he is not the only name in the race. Powers will be paired against industrialist Jack Davis and environmental lawyer Alice Kryzan in the primary. Davis has run for the seat twice before and has a hefty fortune from which to campaign with.
Powers, an Iraq war veteran, recently gained the backing of Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee.
“Together, we can provide the unified front necessary to not only win in November, but bring real leadership and change to Western New York and Washington,” Powers said at the conference announcing the endorsement.
Monroe County’s endorsement leaves Powers waiting for word from Erie County, who have not voted yet.
Powers is a supporter of education reform.
“We must make college more affordable,” he said in a statement on his Web site. “A good education is more than a test score — a good education is teaching kids to think, to solve problems and develop the skills needed on the job.”
On the Republican side, the choice for Congress is uncertain. The party has not officially backed a candidate. Reynolds, as well as Jim Walsh of the Syracuse area, both retired this year and it has proven problematic for the party.
The Republicans are currently considering Rick Lewis, an entrepreneur, as well as Iraq war veteran and author David Bellavia.
The Republicans are hopeful that they can maintain Reynolds seat.
