Numerous construction projects to begin

The office of Facilities and Planning at the College at Brockport has planned major repairs and renovations to several buildings on campus this summer. In a newsletter sent by John Osowski, several of these projects have been outlined in greater detail.

One of the first projects scheduled to be completed by the end of summer is the renovation of the south wing of Lennon Hall, a project that began last year. The aim of the project was to turn rooms that were not meeting building code requirements into brand new laboratory spaces. The new lab spaces will be used for biology, as well as earth science. In 2010, the chemistry labs will be temporarily moved to Smith Hall so they can be similarly renovated.

The repairs on the roof of Hartwell Hall, which began in March, are also scheduled to be finished before the end of the summer. The project had to be halted earlier and the repairs which began this March were restarted. Also needing repairs are the roofs of Mortimer Hall and Perry Hall due to the winter storm.

The preliminary work for a major renovation of the Tower Fine Arts Center also began. Two phases of the project will be planned due to the vastness of the project. The east side of the building will be renovated starting this summer and concluding next summer. The west side of the building will be vacated and renovations begin in summer 2009 and conclude in spring 2010. During these renovations the foreign language department will be temporarily moved to Dailey Hall, while the art department will be relocated in Lathrop and Neff Hall.

Also planned out are the improvements for the fire-alarm systems in Drake Memorial Library, Dailey Hall, Holmes, Brown, Hazen and Commissary buildings. Some of this work is designed for entire system replacements, such as Dailey Hall and Drake Memorial Library. The fire alarm systems in Mortimer, Briggs, Harmon, Gordon and Morgan residence halls are also scheduled for work.

Parking-lot repairs have also been made a priority. Specifically lot W located on Townhome Terrace behind Drake Memorial Library. The lot will be completely torn up and redesigned. The contract for the redesign is scheduled to begin after commencement.

“It seems that they are always doing repairs on Hartwell Hall,” Senior Brittany Granville said. “I also think that they need to tear down these dorms and build new ones, and fix the pot holes, too.”

Others see the construction as a convenience.

“It’s a good thing that they’re spending money in right places trying to make things safe,” Kevin Riley said.
The current inconvenience of faulty issues will balance the inconvenience of construction.

“Some of the noise in the library can get a little annoying,” Devon Starks said.

These renovations come a semester after the renovation of Harrison dining hall was completed. The construction at the Drake Memorial Library has already begun, with the intent of turning part of the basement into a modern computer lab.
