Students set to be Brockin' the Port May 9

Spirits for this year’s Brock the Port are high as students gear up for the last day of classes. The event, taking place Friday, May 9 will include everything from inflatables to live music in an attempt to entertain Brockport students. It will take place from 4 to 9 p.m.

The Brockport Student Government had to increase their efforts this year in order to provide money for Brock the Port. This included a transfer of funds from lecture and student services accounts into the programming account meant for the spring concert and Brock the Port.

Programming budget issues arose as BSG started with $240,000 at the beginning of the fall semester and was left with $54,000 at the end of the semester. The money was spent on bigger events such as the Brock-tober Fest and the Wanda Sykes performance.

With a bigger budget, BSG will be able to emulate past Brock-the-Port events.

This year’s Brock the Port is open to the public. However, the free food is reserved for Brockport students that have a Brockport ID, but non-students will get discounted prices.

The free food and drinks will be from Flash’s Tavern. Free ice cream will also be available from Jimmy Z’s, although supplies will be limited.

“I’m looking forward to free food because I’m running low on dining dollars,” said student Mike Spier.

An extensive range of activities are also put on to appeal to a broader audience. There will be a magician doing balloon hats, caricaturists, cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn. Types of inflatable’s include jousting, an obstacle course, sumo wrestling, laser tag, dual sports equalizer and a bounce house.

Other games will be provided by recreational services.

“We have a ton of give-aways so I expect people to be very pleased,” Darnell Pierce said. The give-aways include Brock-the-Port logo T-shirts, Frisbees, wrist bands, sharpie markers, Nerf footballs and party beads.

A series of bands will also be playing from 4 to 8:50 p.m. The most well-known band playing at Brock the Port is Lemuria, an Indie, punk, powerpop type of band. The Buffalo-based band has upcoming shows around the nation. The newest CD, Get Better, was released in 2007.

“When we played Brockport in the past. Both shows were just regular shows that were a lot of fun,” band member Jason Draper said. “Now this show is an end of the year type ‘fest’ and we’re expecting it to be amazing.”

Other bands include Tru Skillz, Hyan Dry, The Innocent Bystanders and Wisenheimer.

“Why wouldn’t I enjoy it?” said student Tami Vacarro. “It’s a nice way to round out the semester and not worry about finals.”

The event is expected to bring in about 1,000 Brockport students and will be held in the Chase Bank Parking lot. The event was first held off campus last year, partly to help off-campus students get involved.

“I hope you can be comfortable,” said freshman Maria Quagliana. “I know the festivities will be fun, but I just want good weather.”

The weather forecast indicates that Friday’s temperature will likely be in the low 60s and mostly cloudy.

“People are anticipating Brock the Port to be awesome as it always has been,” Pierce said. “This is a time that BSG likes to congratulate students on all their hard work and let them relax right before finals.”
