Drug usage continues to lurk

It’s Friday night and before going out to the bars, students gather with their friends to “pre-game.” A few partner up to play beer-pong. Others sit on the couch and smoke a bowl. It’s nothing out of the norm. But behind the closed doors of the bedroom, some friends snort a few lines of coke. One of your friends may even plan to slip a roofie into someone’s drink that evening.

You may think that your group of friends is different, but this situation is more common than you think. Illegal drug use is becoming an increasingly large problem on college campuses nationwide.

Gary Metz, coordinator of the alcohol and substance abuse studies program at the College at Brockport, says that alcohol, marijuana and tobacco are the most prevalent drugs on college campuses. These three drugs are gateway drugs, meaning they can lead to further use of other substances. Read More

BSG breaks down budget

The Brockport Student Government Board of Directors had much to debate at their meeting Friday, Feb. 29, including the 2008-09 budget, the upcoming spring concert and the annual Brock the Port celebration.

The main controversy surrounding the budget was the salaries for next year’s president, vice president and treasurer. On-campus representative Will Mitchell began debate over the budget by stating that he did not agree with the salaries, but no motion was made to reduce them.

“My feeling about the executive salaries is that the executives make a lot of money, and I think the money would be better spent toward programming and other events to benefit all the students,” Mitchell said. Read More
