Pierce offers laughs, leadership By Allison Kowalski If you see a throng of students outside the Brockport Student Government (BSG) office joking with a person in the center, don’t be surprised — it is Darnell Pierce, the 2007-08 BSG president who offers the gift of laughter. “With Darnell, every moment is one to remember — I laugh around him constantly,” senior Ryan Troup said. Darnell is the type of person who is able to socialize with a variety of people, and that is a unique gift. His talent for getting along with people has served him well this past year as the BSG president. “I have always been intrigued by Darnell’s ability to connect with so many different people,” Erin Halligan said. “He is a truly wonderful individual and someone I consider myself lucky to know and call a friend.” Halligan, a Resident Director in Perry Hall, met Darnell when he was part of her RA staff in Harmon. After Darnell graduated, they became close friends. A graduate of Fowler High School in Syracuse, N.Y., Darnell was extremely active in high school. Besides academics, Darnell was a member of the track and cross country teams, participated in various clubs and organizations, and held a part-time job at Auntie Annie’s. Darnell said he didn’t always plan on attending Brockport; he planned attending Onondaga Community College for two years before transferring to a four-year school. Spontaneously, Darnell made a last-minute decision to attend Brockport. He said he never visited the college. Darnell said he is extremely glad came to Brockport and enjoys the small-town life. “I wanted to get out of Syracuse,” Darnell said. “I am extremely happy here.” When Darnell entered Brockport, he immediately had huge plans. Since he was a sophomore, he always wanted to run for BSG president, yet the time was never right. Busy working toward a physical education degree with a dance minor and serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) for five semesters, Darnell had a plethora of activities to juggle, though he said he would never trade his days as an RA. “The five semesters I was an RA was the best time of my life,” Darnell said. Darnell said one thing he enjoyed most about being an RA was creating programs for his residents. When Darnell was not designing innovative events, he and his residents would play pranks on one another such as duct taping doors. “Darnell is one of the most outgoing, personable and likable people I know,” Halligan said. “He is comfortable, confident and a great role model for others. Anyone who knows Darnell can speak novels about his upbeat spirit and unique personality.” Implementing programs as an RA encouraged Darnell to become a programming assistant in BSG. Ninety percent of BSG is programming, Darnell said. After his first year as a graduate student, Darnell decided he wanted to run for BSG president. He finally took the leap and made time in his busy schedule. This year, one of Darnell’s favorite BSG-designed activities was Brock-tober Fest. However, Darnell said his favorite thing about the entire year was the people with whom he got to work. He said there was nothing better than seeing people from BSG come together to put on programs for students. “It’s just breathtaking,” Darnell said. Next year, Darnell will be completing a year-long internship at SUNY Geneseo. After graduation, Darnell hopes to find a job working with an educational institution, be it residential life or campus life. When Darnell is not in board meetings or classes, he can be found just having a good time, whether it is dancing, working out or playing tennis. Being physically fit and healthy is important to Darnell, and in fact, it is more of a lifestyle. Darnell is earning his master’s degree in athletic administration. As an RA and now finishing up his term as BSG president for the 2007-08 school year, it will be no surprise to see how successful Darnell becomes after graduation. |
