Tips to follow this summer

Summer is the busiest travel season, and it is just around the corner. There will be more people out and about. Whether you travel by land or air, there are some safety issues of which to be aware, but also some helpful tips to make your trips less stressful.

If you are traveling by land, you’re always at risks for accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 40,000 Americans die in crashes every year. Irresponsible, distracted drivers cause most car accidents.

One of the most common causes for accidents is rubber- necking. This is when a driver slows down to watch other drivers or accidents. Cell phones are also a common cause of accidents because drivers try to make calls or text while driving. Driver fatigue is another cause of accidents. According to the U.S. National safety Administration, it accounts for approximately 100,000 accidents every year.

Other top causes include drunk driving and reckless, aggressive driving. According to the New York State Police, an aggressive driver is one who “operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner, without regard for the rights or safety of the other users of the streets and highways.”

Some ways to stay safe on the roads this summer are to be aware and attentive while driving. If you feel like you’re becoming drowsy, pull over and take a break. Share the driving responsibilities if possible.

Don’t drink and drive — this is the only way to prevent an alcohol-related accident. Also, take your time, remain calm on the roads and give yourself plenty of “cushion” time so you don’t have to speed.

If you’re also looking at the rise in gas prices, you can stretch your gas mileage by changing your air filter, cleaning out extra items in your trunk, straightening out your wheels, getting a tune-up and making sure that your tires are properly inflated and your gas cap is on.

If you’re traveling by air, the summer is a busy season for people taking vacations. The prices increase and planes are usually fuller this time of year.

To make your travel a little less stressful, try using smaller airports and smaller planes, which tend to be less crowded.

You can also try looking at the best connecting hubs to fly through. This can make the dreaded connecting flight a breeze. Make contingency plans just in case all else fails. Also, remember the Transportation Security Administration’s packing guidelines. This can make your trip through security at least a little faster.

No matter where you’re traveling this summer, remember to stay safe and relax. It’s summer, so have fun!
