Tennis season springs anew

It was a serene scene, perfectly fitting the season. Warm temperatures, cool breezes and neon yellow balls flying through the air at rapid speeds. Spring has returned, and so has the College at Brockport tennis team.
The Golden Eagles were out in Cortland this past Sunday, April 20. Both Brockport and the Red Dragons competed for the SUNYAC title in the fall, but teams are allowed to play in the spring — and most do.
According to Brockport head coach Ed Gonzalez, teams try to stay prepared by playing throughout the year. SUNYAC teams are allowed to play 20 matches, and practice for 19 weeks per year.
Other leagues play the regular season in the spring, and the national championship is in May.
Brockport, which started practice in mid-Feburary, plays four matches this spring, with each coming on weekends. New Paltz and Geneseo also play in the spring, though Plattsburgh and Potsdam do not.
Earlier this month, the Golden Eagles played against teams from RIT, Rochester and William Smith. |
