Doggies go undefeated on way to championship

The Brockport Doggies Rugby Football Club dominated at the New York Upstate Rugby Tournament, winning at both the D-I and D-III levels while only allowing one try all weekend.
“This is the one tournament we’ve been waiting for,” Doggies player Steve Jensen said. It was certainly worth the wait.
The D-I team defeated Syracuse 10-0 in the championship game after bruising wins over Binghamton and Cortland. According to Jensen, Chris Demetro was the star, “playing out of his mind.” Demetro was named “Man of the Match” for his efforts.
In addition to the championship, the Doggies got a big dose of revenge on the host. Cortland beat Brockport in the fall, but the Doggies pounded them in a 29-5 win.
The D-III side showed no mercy on defense, shutting out and shutting down teams from Syracuse, Oswego and Oneonta. The young team was loaded with freshmen, with three players scoring their first trys for Brockport.
“We were nervous coming in,” Doggies’ player Tom Sedor said. “But everyone played well.”
The Doggies have an additional tournament coming up in Oswego this Saturday.
Several members of the D-I team will also compete as members of the New York State team this Sunday, with spots on regional and national teams possibly on the line. |
