Eagles fly high in win over Elmira

With head coach Traci Lian concentrating on improving the College at Brockport women’s lacrosse team’s offensive prowess, she noticed the best idea may simply be to get Lexie Goodhart the ball.

Lian said her team tried to work on offensive plays with a non-conference matchup against Elmira. With a few designed plays set up for Goodhart, the results were magnificent.

Goodhart tied a school record for most goals in a single game with seven. She had four in the opening 13 minutes of play and raised her season total to 27 goals.

Outside of Goodhart, the other 13 goals were spread out among 10 other Brockport players. Kim Morris had one goal and five assists. Julia Decker and Carrie Kane each registered two goals and two assists.

“We tried to rotate people in and give some of our starters a little rest,” Lian said.

Morris’ goal with 9:20 left in the first half gave Brockport a 10-1 lead. They cruised to the final buzzer with a 20-10 win. It’s the third time Brockport has scored at least 20 goals in 2008.

Goalie Jamie Kaminsky also had a nice game, stopping 13 of 21 shots.

“Overall, it was a good team effort,” Lian said.

The win moved the Golden Eagles to 7-3 for the season. They sit in a three-way tie with Geneseo and Oneonta for the final two playoff spots in the SUNYAC conference tournament. Brockport still has a game against both teams.
Lian said the confidence level is still high despite two close conference losses against the top two teams. They lost to Buffalo State by one and to Cortland by two in overtime.

“The Cortland loss was real tough,” Lian said. “But we’ve learned a lot from it and we’re still working on staying mentally focused.”

Brockport will start its playoff push Tuesday with a trip to Oswego to take on the Lakers (5-8, 2-3). After a non-conference game with RIT on Thursday, April 24, the Golden Eagles will take on Geneseo and Oneonta to end the regular season.

“Geneseo is our big rival,” Lian said. “And Oneonta is our last game. We won’t have a problem getting ready to play those games.”
