Keating doesn't drop the ball By Amanda Seef
Politically minded, athletic, amateur rock star. Junior Bill Keating is the vice president-elect for the 2008-09 academic year for the Brockport Student Government and is involved with many aspects of student life. As a double major in political science and business administration, with a concentration in pre-law, Keating has an eye for politics. He is currently an off-campus representative with BSG, sitting on the Board of Directors as the chair of the Appropriations Committee. He is also in the Political Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha. “It deals with legislation, which is quite appealing,” Keating said of his current board position. He hopes to become a lawyer dealing with corporate bankruptcy law. He recalls wanting to become a lawyer since the fifth grade, with his goals becoming more specific as time went on. Academically, Keating is a tutor at the Student Learning Center for political science, business finance and intermediate statistics. Keating will serve as the vice president of BSG next year. His responsibilities will include chairing the Board of Directors, as well as serving as an executive of BSG, assisting programming, promotions and office operations. He also served as a representative of Brockport at the annual SUNY day in Albany. Keating attended the day with President Halstead, BSG President Darnell Pierce and BSG Treasurer Kyle Amendola. They were able to lobby legislature and explain to assemblymen and senators what The College at Brockport needs in order to excel. Growing up in West Seneca near Buffalo, Keating was actively involved with the sports programs at his high school. He previously played hockey and continued with lacrosse, playing for two years as a Golden Eagle. As a lacrosse player, he sat on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the two years he was on the team. As an active student in the athletic and administrative spheres at Brockport, Keating hopes to be an advocate for bringing in new athletic facilities. He would like to see Brockport upgrade their fields, potentially bringing in turf for the football field. He believes that the field will benefit all students and will also draw more students to our facilities and the college. Outside of his work and academics, Keating is an avid fan of video games. He will challenge anyone to NHL ’07, and states that he can beat them as well. However, his housemates say otherwise. Junior Nick Wurl lives with Keating and has known him for about seven years. Wurl said that Keating is often crushed by his opponents in their house. One of Wurl’s favorite memories includes himself and Keating sitting in Wurl’s garage challenging each other with video games. When he isn’t playing sports-related video games, Keating is working on becoming a rock star, through the popular video game Rock Band. “I like to get my jam on in Rock Band — I play a mean drum,” Keating said. Keating enjoys to play golf and Kan-Jam. He has played golf since he was 10, and his after-school job was working at the local driving range. Keating was the “ball-picker-upper,” and was skilled at dodging the balls and learned how to become a better driver. He also likes to watch movies. His favorites are Van Wilder and Lucky Number Slevin. Friends and roommates of Keating describe him as hard-working, motivated and a “good guy.” He is described as analytical and persistent with his work. “He’s become more determined to do what he wants,” Wurl said. “He gives 110 percent, never anything less,” housemate Jeff Scanzuso said. Roommates agree that Keating has odd sleeping habits, however. He will often stay up until 4 or 5 a.m. Scanzuso says that the habit dates back to freshman year, when Keating would stay up all night to get homework done and have classes in the late afternoon. Although many students see the serious side of Keating with his role in BSG, it is evident he is laid back. Scanzuso says Keating has a joke-around attitude and rarely will get mad. Scanzuso recalls memories from their freshman year when their roommates would have fights with ramen noodle packets and Gold Bond powder. Keating is “pumped” to serve as vice president for the next year, and will continue with his roles in BSG, bringing the students what they want and need to succeed on campus. “You only go to college once, live it up,” Keating said. |
