Flo Rida gets low with Brockport students

When asked just how low shorty got, Flo Rida responded with seven low’s, though he could not specify just how low that put shorty.

Nearly 800 students came to the spring concert in Tuttle North Ice Arena, Thursday, April 17. Flo Rida, the main performer of the evening, was preceeded by Cloud 9 and H2O.

Cloud 9 opened the show at 7 p.m., to a sparse showing of students. The band consists of two Brockport alumni. The music played was mainly original, though they did include a cover song. The band’s rap-goes-alternative style got students moving. They were the only entertainment of the evening that required a stage with musical instruments.

H2O, a local act, was similar to Flo Rida’s performance, bringing in the rap music toward which the crowd was geared. Though students were still trickling in during their act, the rap and hip-hop group pleased the students. The duo was excited to perform with Flo Rida.

When Flo Rida hit the stage, the students hit the floor and were crowding near the barricades adjacent to the stage. He started off with songs from his debut album, Mail on Sunday. He is currently working on his second disc to potentially be released in December, as well as the music video for the next single, “In the Ayer,” featuring Will.I.Am.

It was evident students wanted to hear the popular song, “Low,” as the DJ working the turn-tables played repetitive teases of the song’s first chord to loud cheering by the crowd.

By the middle of the set, Flo Rida decided to meet with the fans, jumping off the stage as the crowd pressed forward, nearly knocking down the barriers between the stage and the crowd.

Once it was nearing time to perform “Low,” Flo Rida invited some girls from the audience to dance along to the tune of “apple-bottom jeans, boots with the fur.” About 20 to 30 students joined Flo Rida on the stage, dancing along to the No. 1 song in the nation according to past charts.
