Say goodbye to the Golden Eagles

By Jim Krencik

Think you’re busy? Spring is the time when classes, papers and work pile up, but unless you play for the College at Brockport softball team, you don’t know busy.

The Golden Eagles are about to disappear on a road trip that will take them to far-away vistas like Potsdam, Oswego and Cortland. That swing through upstate New York sounds tough, but doing it in three days? Sounds crazy, but that’s what Brockport is doing this Thursday, April 17 through Saturday, April 19. Throw in another doubleheader at Plattsburgh Monday, April 21 and the team bus will be due for service repairs.

While the bus will get a rest, the players will not. Brockport plays a doubleheader vs. Morrisville at home Wednesday, April 16 a day after hosting Geneseo, setting up a stretch of 12 games in seven days that will tax the arms and bodies of a team that has played only six games since returning home from spring break.

Overall, the Golden Eagles will have to shoehorn 24 games into the two weeks left in the regular season, a tiring streak forced by unplayable conditions.

Old-time Cubs second baseman Ernie Banks famously aspired for doubleheaders on beautiful days, but Brockport’s going to have to live through it.

Rachel Maxon, Courtney Turchan, Kristina Wood, Hilary Dank and Lindsay Szymanski have all gotten on base in more than 40 percent of their at bats this year, and wearing down pitchers will be important as the Golden Eagles’ opponents face daily twin-bills, too.

Brockport’s bats look ready to go, but what about the other half of the inning? Stephanie Geer (1.02 ERA, six complete games) and Tarah Wetherby (2.05 ERA and a 3-0 record) have led a strong pitching group, but only five Eagles have thrown a pitch this season. If the pitching can hold up, anything is possible, but this is a gauntlet.

By the time the Golden Eagles come back home for a homestand that ends the season, they will have racked up many miles on the road, with the post-season in reach.
