Brockport Invite: What to watch for By Jim Krencik The Brockport Invitational will feature more than enough talent and intrigue to keep attendees jumping around from event to event. Brockport head coach Mark Krueger said that he thinks the hammer throw will be “an amazing event” with current Golden Eagles competing against two former Brockport greats — 2003 All-American and Olympic Trials qualifier Jesse Doty, and 2007 All-American Jake Basher will test Dom Gonzalez and the rest of the hammer throwers. But the competition is not all alumni. The University of Rochester, Alfred University, Alfred State (coached by Brockport alum Gary Moore) and Finger Lakes Community College will all bring teams to Brockport. Krueger said that Rochester, who hosted the meet Brockport competed at two weeks ago, is the strongest team of the visitors. “They have a solid group and are competitive in each event, similar to us,” Krueger said. While the competition is ready to have a good showing, the Invitational should be primarily a place for the Golden Eagles to have breakout performances. “There are a lot of people we are looking for breakout performances by,” Krueger said, highlighting one race in particular that he said he thinks will feature the biggest burst. “Amanda Elias will be running the 400 and we’re looking for a really fast time from her and a few others running the 400 as well,” he said. Of course, no meet would be complete without a strong showing by the women’s team’s jumpers. Shannon O’Keeffe has finished first all over the country, and this meet should be no different for the No. 1-ranked D-III triple-jumper. Brockport’s depth will be in full view at Special Olympics Stadium, as the Golden Eagles will get to show their skills to those who have been only able to hear or read about their pursuits. “Everyone on the team wants to be able to compete in front of their friends and family and this is usually one of the few times they can do that,” Krueger said. Most importantly, this meet is one chance to not have to take a bus ride to an unfamilar track. The Golden Eagles know the field and the comfort-level will finally match the level of competition. “Our facility is very good and we are most comfortable here,” Krueger said. ”It’s great to be able to compete on it.” Schedule of Events 11 a.m. — Hammer Throw, Shot Put, Pole Vault, Long Jump, High Jump |
