With the memory of the Virginia Tech massacre still fresh in student’s minds, college campuses across the country solemnly remember the first anniversary.

The tragedy April 16, 2007 left 32 members of the Virginia Tech community dead and many more injured, making it the deadliest school shooting in United States history, followed by the Columbine massacre in 1999.

The Day of Remembrance for Hokies is Wednesday, April 16, 2008.
“On this day, the Virginia Tech community reflects on the vibrant lives of the 32 students and faculty who were tragically taken from us a year ago,” the Web site for the Day of Remembrance read.

“Through light, art and music we pay tribute to each and every person we lost. We gather to honor our friends, colleagues and family members. We will never forget.”

Cell phone convenience and disturbance

By The Editorial Board

edcartoon

It’s Thursday night and you’re trying to enjoy yourself at your favorite band’s local performance. It’s hard, however, to concentrate on the band when the people ahead, behind and on the sides of you all have their cell phones out texting away.

Yes, it’s your cell phone and you have a right to use it as you see fit, but there are times when it is OK to put your phone away in order to respect the people around you.

When you’re walking on campus, there’s no need to scream. It’s not a can on a string. I’m sure the person on the other end can hear you. And if you’re arguing, save it. Others don’t want to hear all the horrid details of your romantic discord or of your roommate’s humpfest last night.

Don’t text in class. You’ll probably want to pay attention to when and where your final is more than when and where you’re going Thursday night. By the way, it’s annoying when your phone loudly vibrates every two minutes.

The Organization for Students of African Descent (OSAD) held their 22nd annual fashion show Saturday, April 12. The show was held at 6 p.m. in the Seymour College Student Union Ballroom. The show was an exciting event filled with anticipation and anxious spectators waiting for the Brockport student models to strut their stuff.

The show consisted of seven scenes: masquerade/corset, all male, shoes and accessories, candy, the dollhouse, rock star and animals.

The costumes for the candy and animal scenes were designed and made by 2006 College at Brockport alumna Torrie Sheppard. The candy scene costumes were made up of various types of candy from Starbursts to Twizzlers.

The animal scene costumes were inspired by snakes, cats and birds, and by the models’ personality and personal style.

This is not the first time that Sheppard has created costumes for the OSAD fashion show. Sheppard has also recently participated in the Levi’s Project 501 design challenge.

“The candy outfits were beautifully done,” said Jamila Crossdale, the Carribbean Student Association vice president. Read More

Women's lacrosse suffers frustrating loss to Cortland

By Jim Krencik
Sports Editor

The College at Brockport women’s lacrosse team blew a late lead, sending the Cortland Red Dragons celebrating and the Golden Eagles into revenge mode.

Cortland scored the game’s final four goals after trailing for most of the second half, negating what had been a successful run by Brockport.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as three goals in the final half, after a newfound level of composure brought Brockport back from an early 7-3 deficit.
