Letters to the Editor
By You, The Reader

This is in response to Michael Thayer’s letter regarding the Relay for Life promotional T-shirts. This is written in conjunction with Sadie, the American Cancer Society staff partner for The College at Brockport Relay for Life. As people who are very charged about the issue of cancer, we truly appreciate Thayer’s genuine passion about the fight against cancer.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as impassioned about the issue as Thayer. This is why slogans or activities are used to capture the attention of students to draw them into the fight. The slogan this year for The College at Brockport’s Relay for Life April 25 is one that has been used across the nation at several colleges and universities. Other slogans include, “Want to Spend the Night With Me,” “The Ultimate One Night Stand,” and “Can You Last All Night?” Please understand that we do not put these slogans on the event T-shirts — only the promotional ones. The shirts that participants are given at the event are produced by a company affiliated with the American Cancer Society and this year will say, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.”

Obviously there was never any intention of offending anyone or making light of the serious issue of cancer. If that is how it was taken, we apologize. However, in Sadie’s experience at more than 11 college Relays, it helps to have many draws. Some people are drawn in because they have been touched by cancer, some because their friends ask them and others because they see a funny shirt slogan and say, “Hmm, I want to check that out.” If someone comes to Relay because of a funny slogan and then is moved to fight back by the event, that is wonderful.

At the event we focus on celebrating cancer survivors, remembering those we have lost and fighting back against the disease. If everyone who is at the event takes this away with them, then it was a success, regardless of why they came in the first place.
