The College at Brockport women’s softball team’s great season hit a snag in the Golden Eagles home opener, as the Buffalo State Bengals powered their way to a 6-3, 10-3 sweep Tuesday afternoon.

Brockport responded with some power of their own in their next doubleheader, a 6-2, 4-12 split with St. John Fisher. Three Golden Eagles launched shots over the outfield fence against the Cardinals, including two in a four-run fifth inning in game one.
Hilary Dank, who nearly had a homer in game one against Buffalo State, started the fifth with a solo shot. Kelly Briscoe duplicated the feat with two runners on later in the inning, turning what had been a tie game into an easy victory.

The nightcap wasn’t as powerful for the Golden Eagles, although Rachel Maxon did hit a solo shot of her own, part of a 3-for-3 night in the batter’s box. St. John Fisher scored five runs in the third and added four runs in the fourth, and the game called after five innings due to the eight-run difference in score.

The offensive onslaught was a carry-over from the Bengals doubleheader, as big innings also cost Brockport against Buffalo State. A five-run fifth inning sealed the Golden Eagles fate in game one, negating a 2-for-3 performance by Nicole Szymanski.

In game two, the Bengals wasted no time in blowing by Brockport, as four unearned runs crossed the plate in the first inning. The Golden Eagles prevented the game from comng to an early end by scoring three runs in the fifth, but Buffalo State’s lead was not to be erased.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Brockport was scheduled to play 12 games in six days, but rains have forced the the postponment of both a home doubleheader against Morrisville and a road trip up to Potsdam. The Golden Eagles doubleheader with SUNYIT, scheduled for Saturday in Utica, is still on the schedule.

Getting In Geer

Stephanie Geer leads the Golden Eagles pitching staff with a 1.02 earned run average. Geer has four wins so far in her freshman season.
