Softball schedule stacked after lay-off The College at Brockport softball team (8-4, 2-0) continued their recent domination of SUNY Fredonia (6-10, 1-5) by winning their sixth and seventh-straight games over the Blue Devils Wednesday by scores of 7-1 and 9-3. Led by strong pitching and timely hitting, Brockport swept the season series with Fredonia for the third year in a row. The Golden Eagles have not lost to Fredonia since 2005. In the first game, Courtney Turchan led the way with four of the Eagles’ 18 hits, including two doubles. Every player in Brockport’s starting line-up for the game registered a hit. Pitcher Stephanie Geer started and finished the game for the Eagles, allowing only one earned run on six hits. She walked none while striking out nine on her way to her third win of the year. Geer has gone the distance in all four of her starts this year with a SUNYAC-best 0.78 ERA. The freshman also has an incredible 28 strikeouts to just two walks all season long. In the night cap, Brockport exploded with a six-run fifth inning, capped off by a two-out, two-RBI single by Lindsay Szymanski to open up the game for good with an 8-1 lead. Tarah Wetherby pitched her third complete game of the season in the win. She allowed two earned runs on 11 hits. Wetherby has been just as impressive as Geer on the year, as her ERA actually went up to 1.67 after letting up only two earned runs. Wetherby is 3-0 on the season. Offensively, it was Turchan again leading the way. She had two hits, both doubles, while Hilary Dank knocked in a run and scored twice finishing off a solid doubleheader. She had four hits and scored four times on the day. For Turchan, it was a six-hit day that bumped her batting average all the way up to .375. She started the day batting .250. The Eagles also took full advantage of four Fredonia errors which turned into two unearned Brockport runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. After five days off, Brockport will head into this week with an extremely busy schedule. They have 12 scheduled games in the next eight days starting with the home opener against Buffalo State, which was Tuesday, April 8. The Bengals were third in the SUNYAC pre-season coaches’ poll. Brockport was fourth. After a day off Wednesday, April 9, the Eagles will play four double-headers Thursday through Sunday, including six conference games. Brockport’s pitching has been superb, but this weekend is going to test and stretch the Golden Eagles’ arms. |
