Campus celebrates 25th Scholar's Day By Laura Luettger The College at Brockport is hosting its 25th annual Scholars Day event Wednesday, April 9 to celebrate scholarly work. The celebration was first instituted in 1984 by the College Senate, and the tradition has continued since then, expanding from 66 presenters the first Scholars Day to the 469 students and 27 faculty/staff members who will present this year. Sessions begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4:45 p.m. on the main Brockport campus. There will be five different sessions throughout the day. Scholars Day presentations at the MetroCenter take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This is only the fourth year presentations have been given at the MetroCenter. Sessions include The Roswell UFO Incident and American Popular Culture Responses to the Technologies of Space Flight, The Alchohol and Nutrition Connection for The College at Brockport Students and The Effect of Primary Timing on Voter Turnout, among many others for the day. Delta College, Honors seniors and many groups of classes will be presenting, as well. According to The College at Brockport’s Web site, Scholars Day was established to “publicize research, including methodologies and conclusions; share new ideas and concepts; expand knowledge; and provide an opportunity to socialize with members of the campus community outside of one’s own department.” “My teacher is giving extra credit for going to a presentation, so I decided to look up the schedule for it and it actually looked interesting,” sophomore LeeAnn Greenauer said. “You can go to a presentation or two and still have time to relax and catch up on work.” All presenters have the option to partake in a special luncheon to meet each other and discuss works. The schedule of events can also be found by visiting the college’s Web site, www.brockport.edu. |
