PR club hosts Sabres Alumni basketball game By Allison Kowalski If you did a double take past Sabres players in the Tuttle basketball courts Wednesday, April 2, you are not alone. The Brockport Public Relations (PR) Club hosted a basketball game between Sabres hockey alumni and faculty and staff at The College at Brockport. More than 100 people attended the event. In June 2007, Justin Oliver got the idea of the Sabres Alumni coming to Brockport after he saw them visit his high school, Lockport High School, on television. Oliver said he began researching how to get the Sabres Alumni at Brockport and brought the idea to the PR club. Everyone was on board. The basketball game is the biggest event the PR club has hosted so far, Oliver said. Oliver is a senior and treasurer of the PR club. The PR club began planning the event in August 2007. “We secured financing in October,” Oliver said. “Then a week or two before winter break is when we began coordinating with facilities, campus life, Brockport Student Government (BSG) and University Police.” Putting on an event is no easy task. The PR club needed approval from the athletic department and facilities and planning as well as following correct and safe Brockport Student Government and Sabres policies. “Overall, the event went extremely smooth, being that it was a first time that this event has ever taken place and the first time a lot of the PR club members have ever hosted a major event,” Oliver said. Brockport faculty and staff who participated included: “I was on cloud nine because a student club had just put on a major event that has never ever been done at our school before, and we did an amazing job,” Oliver said. “It’s like we did the impossible. I feel like I’m on a Super Bowl-winning team.” The Sabres Alumni signed autographs and Sabres paraphernalia was available for students after the basketball game was over. During the game Guthrie injured his leg, but is making a successful recovery. “It was amazing to sit back and watch all the hardwork and planning in motion,” Oliver said. “I’m so happy that our club was able to bring this event to Brockport. This event brought so many different counterparts together for a good cause. It gets no better than that. That’s school spirit.” |
