Tips to eat right and stay healthy By Kaylin Taggart For some people, eating right is a life or death situation. As chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease begin to rapidly increase, many people wonder if there is anything that can lessen their chances of getting these life-threatening diseases. The two of these scenarios put together equal one eccentric, yet interesting list of foods that are surprisingly good for you. Dark chocolate is one of the most referenced foods that is unexpectedly good for you, in moderation. According to www.thenibble.com, it is an antioxidant, a substance in food that prevents and/or slows down oxidative damage to the body. Pomegranate, cranberries, tea, tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, broccoli, kiwi, spinach, brussel sprouts and barley are also other examples of antioxidants. Besides being one of the most well-known cures to PMS, dark chocolate also lowers high-blood pressure. A popular diet in the celebrity world is eating raw foods, an article in www.allmyrecipes.com said. When eating cooked food, the heat reduces vitamins, and damages proteins and enzymes which help with digestion. Raw food can also reverse and/or stop the advancement of chronic diseases. If you have the flu or a runny nose, try eating raw foods. They help fight against those illnesses as well. If you are trying to reduce hunger, which most people on diets try to do, sniff some grapefruit oil. It will lessen your appetite. According to an article in the Daily Mail, celebrities like Jennifer Lopez have been known to do this. Make sure you buy actual grapefruit oil. Grabbing a grapefruit at Harrison and smelling it may not necessarily get you anywhere — you need the real stuff. By eating asparagus, dried prunes and parsley, you can repress hunger and reduce bloating. When it comes to getting all the vitamins in your daily diet, most people do not have success. Many vitamins are found in everyday foods. Vitamin C can be found in more than just orange juice. Limes, green peppers and strawberries also contain this cold-preventing vitamin. Carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots contain Vitamin A. Vitamin E is found in nuts and seeds, whole grains and leafy vegetables. So, the next time you eat a bar of dark chocolate, or a sip of glass of red wine, remember you are helping yourself. But the next time you eat 10 bars of dark chocolate and five glasses of wine, think moderation and prevention. |
