It’s that time of year again. Students are making plans to either live on campus or off campus, leases need to be signed, housing deposits are due ... Let’s admit it, all of these things at the end of a semester can be a real headache.

Well, the Office of Residential Life is trying to make it easier on students to complete their housing applications for the following year.

All housing applications must now be completeed online. We applaud Residential Life because this is a great convenience for busy college students who have enough trouble turning papers in on time.

The advance housing deposit ($100) must be paid at the Office of Student Accounts before completing the application online.

The deadline for the 2008-09 housing applications for the academic year is April 11 at 4 p.m. The application can be found at www.brockport.edu/reslife/.

If you don’t feel like living on campus anymore, you have many different housing options. The Brockport Student Government offers a handy off-campus housing list to students who are looking to live in either apartments or houses around Brockport. This list can either be mailed or faxed to you, or it can be easily downloaded from www.bsgonline.org/housing.htm.

According to the Student Life & Services page on The College at Brockport’s Web site, on-campus housing offers you a furnished residence in a reasonably secure environment. As far as off-campus housing goes, SL&S states that most housing is rented on a contract or lease basis, that is, you agree to live in the unit for a stated period of time — most often 10 to 12 months. (You must also sign an agreement if you live in on-campus housing). This means you are legally responsible for all rent payments for that period, whether or not you live there, unless some alternative arrangement is made with the landlord. Keep in mind that a security deposit and the first month’s rent are almost always required when signing a lease. Remember to plan ahead so you have a place to live in the fall.

Can’t find someone to live with next year or want to live with new people? There is a new forum on Angel called “Housing Personals.” It is for students looking for suitemates for on-campus housing for the 2008-09 academic year. Students can easily post an ad for a roommate. There is also a Facebook group named, “Housing Personals.”

Students can also post ads for roommates there, as well.

Things to consider when looking for a roommate:

• Do they clean up after themselves?

• Are they respectful of you and your things?

• Sometimes living with friends is a bad idea.

• Do they bring more men/girls home than homework?

• Random people often turn out better than you thought.

• Be careful when choosing because a terrible roommate can lead to a terrible college experience.

Happy roommate hunting!
