Spring seasons slowed by snows The opening home games of the season for both the College at Brockport softball and baseball teams were postponed due to poor field conditions, sending both team’s schedules into a mess equal to that on the fields. The baseball team was set to open its SUNYAC schedule with games against the Oswego Lakers and Cortland Red Dragons. The game instead took place Tuesday, April 1. Cortland is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCBWA poll. “We were looking forward to getting out there,” said Justin Beach, head coach for the baseball team. “Unfortunately, the weather has prevented that.” The softball team had planned its SUNYAC opener to be against Fredonia Tuesday, April 31, but the Blue Devils’ field was not ready. Brockport’s teams had just returned from spring training trips ready to begin their home schedules. The softball team spent a week in Florida, beginning the season with a 6-4 overall record. The baseball team spent time in Arizona, starting its season with a record of 4-7. The softball team has continued to practice as much as they can too, said head softball coach John Dumaw. He commented that all the players wanted to be outside, but the main focus is just keeping the players ready to play by hitting in the gym and practicing drills. “We’re all in the same boat here,” Dumaw said. “It’s just the nature of New York. You have to be a swimmer to play softball here [with all the snow].” Because of the switch in the weather, the baseball team has been practicing outside as much as possible, Beach said. They have also been practicing drills for game-like situations to keep the players on their toes. “We’re just trying to keep their spirits up,” Beach said. “We can’t worry about the weather because it’s just something we can’t control.” |
