Brockport sparks comeback win By Jim Krencik The College at Brockport women’s lacrosse team is experienced at most positions, with returning starters at every position except goaltender. The Golden Eagles’ veteran presence was evident in a 13-11 win over the Rochester Yellow Jackets. Experience doesn’t mean that these Golden Eagles are slow, as it was speed that helped turn Rochester mistakes into quick goals. “We work a lot on causing turnovers, and then causing a fast break,” Brockport head coach Traci Lian said. “It’s good to get down the field before they can set up.” Both Julia Decker and Lexie Goodhart lit up the Yellow Jackets’ defense, with Decker finishing with three goals and two assists and Goodhart on the board with five goals — including Brockport’s first three scores — and two helpers. Despite the early offensive advantage, the Golden Eagles found themselves down. Rochester led 6-4 with less than three minutes to play in the first half, but Decker scored twice in a 30-second span to tie the game heading into the half. Brockport would never trail again. The Golden Eagles barely made it out to the field for the second half at the end of halftime. Apparently no one told the team their time was up, and for Rochester that was the beginning of the end. Kim Morris scored two goals for Brockport to keep the game tied, and Jamie Kaminsky came back into the game and helped hold the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard for nearly 14 minutes. Kaminsky, the Golden Eagles’ freshman goaltender, was in, then out and then back in for her third win of the season. Lian said there was a good reason for the yo-yoing. “We wanted to give Heidi (McKay) a chance,” Lian said. “I also wanted to talk to Jamie.” Whatever Lian told Kaminsky, it worked. Rochester had a number of good chances in the second half disappear due to good goaltending. Brockport will need strong goaltending in their next game, as the Buffalo State Bengals will head down the Thruway averaging 14.25 goals per game. The Buffalo State game has been moved back one day on the schedule to Wednesday, April 2 to let the fields dry out. That would seem to benefit Brockport’s fast-paced offense, but this veteran lineup might not even need the ecological advantage. The Golden Eagles’ SUNYAC season is scheduled to kick all the way into high gear, as Brockport follows the Bengal battle with a trip to face Potsdam Saturday, April 5. Morrisville is scheduled to visit Brockport on Tuesday, April 8. The Bears and Mustangs were scheduled to play one another April 1. |
