Jim DeBell, former baseball coach, dies at 79 By Jim Krencik The College at Brockport suffered a loss bigger than any on the court March 25, when Jim DeBell died from cancer at age 79. DeBell led the Golden Eagles baseball team for nine seasons, but to current students he was the impeccably dressed timekeeper at men’s and women’s basketball games who was always quick to help anyone and everyone. DeBell was named last year to the Hall of Heritage, the highest honor awarded by the college’s alumni association. DeBell was also honored in 2000 after his election to the Frontier Field Walk of Fame, a testament to his influence in the area. DeBell graduated from Brockport in 1951 and became a teacher after two years in the army. He taught and coached in the Rochester City School District, leading successful baseball, soccer and basketball teams at Jefferson High School. DeBell came back to Brockport after retiring from teaching, bringing his kind ways to his alma mater. “Jim DeBell had an exceptional career as a teacher and coach,” said Mike Andriatch, executive director of Alumni Relations and Major Projects at the college. “He influenced hundreds of lives in the classroom and on the playing fields. But the thing that most people want to express about him is the character trait that so many people strive for: He was a great person.” DeBell is survived by his wife, three children and thousands of teachers, students and athletes who benefited from a life dedicated to helping others. |
