Students improve life for Ghanaian students

This past winter session, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 17, Bramley Resident Director Mark Guthrie coordinated the fundraising program and brought students to study abroad in Ghana.

The school supplies are given to two schools in Ghana — ASITE Presby School, 347 students in a village school, and Nkwatawaga D/A 3 & 4 Primary School.

“I’m very passionate about assisting third-world countries,” Guthrie said. “People of Ghana welcome us with open arms. They think we’re celebrities. They’re so humble and peaceful, so appreciative of us.”

Dorms, the Seymour College Union drive box, Residential Life and EOP help collect school supplies. Books, pencils, paper, pens and notebooks are collected.

Alpha Phi (Rho alpha chapter) also helps improve the lives’ of students in Ghana. The chapter recently donated $4,000 to build a new library in February and is expected to be completed by the 2008 Ghana trip.

The supplies help middle school children because it encourages them to continue to high school and college.

These children are taught four to five languages, so there is no language barrier because the students know English.

The Ghana trip takes place during the winter session for three and a half weeks. If students are interested, they should apply now and obtain their passports during the summer.

“It’s an excellent trip,” Guthrie said. “It develops our minds by seeing other cultures. It shows Brockport students how America takes education for granted. They come back and begin to study harder. Brockport students love it — the sunshine, food culture.”
