Women's Center hosts two special events

The College at Brockport Women’s Center has planned two events on campus in the months of March and April in an attempt to educate and inform students of important causes.

The first event was held Tuesday, March 25 in the Seymour Union ballroom, titled “I Love the Female Orgasm,” and was a lecture about sexual misconceptions. The event, hosted by Dorian Solot and Marshall Miller, dealt with some of the misinformation about sex in the media, specifically the way orgasms are presented in magazines, movies, television and pornography, the latter being a discussion about the unrealistic expectations that pornography could place on young people. The presentation also included discussions on how to have a proper adult sex life when a person is the victim of sexual abuse as a child.

Another topic the couple discussed in the seminar was the misconceptions that are taught in high school sexual education courses. Some of what was discussed included the lack of real sexual education in these courses.

Some of the specified readings that were used as resources and listed as possible future readings for those interested included The Guide to Getting It On by Paul Joannides, Allies in Healing: When the Person you Love Was Sexually abused as a Child by Laura Davis and The Elusive Orgasm: A Woman’s Guide to Why She Can’t and How She Can Orgasm by Vivienne Cass.

Hosts Solot and Miller have been a couple for the last 15 years and have one child together. Both are trained in sexual education and have done more than 400 presentations at various schools, mostly colleges. When asked about bringing their presentation to various schools Solot stated that her presentation was put on at the request of the students. The presenters also have a book recently published titled I love the female orgasm. The book is available for sale now and deals with some of the same subjects that were discussed in the seminar.

The second event planned in April is titled “The Clothesline Project” and takes place in the Seymour Union Ballroom. The event will feature the ballroom filled with T-shirts hung side by side in an attempt to “break the silence” and bear witness to violence against women and children. The project will focus on providing healing for the survivors, as well as educating the public.

The event will be held Wednesday, April 2 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Seymour College Union Ballroom and is being Sponsored by The College at Brockport Women’s Center, Student Social Work Organization and the Rochester Chapter of the Nation Organization of Women.
