Vogue Vixen: Dress for success

Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have. In other words, it’s better to dress a degree nicer than what you originally planned for in an interview. This piece of advice may come in handy, especially for our graduating seniors who are looking for a job. What you wear for an interview is key for your prospective employer. In this case, your book is going to be judged by its cover.

You want to make sure you understand to the fullest extent what type of company with which you are interviewing. Going to an interview doesn’t always mean black suit or stiletto heels. You are going to want to show who you are, and fashion is the best way to do that. Don’t be afraid to wear color. Incorporating a bright color into a suit, as in the shirt you pair it with or the shoes you wear, will help you stand out.

Generally speaking, jeans are out when it comes to any type of interview and low-cut tops as well. Wear jewelry that will accentuate your face, like earrings, but nothing too flashy to draw the attention away from your face.

Avoid bangle bracelets and gaudy earrings. If your jewelry clunks around or makes a lot of noise as you move, this will be distracting, not flattering. You will want to be sure they are always looking at you and not staring at your wrist.

As your outfit will look professional, make sure your accessories do as well. Try to coordinate your bag and a piece of your outfit. This may seem like a minimal detail, but carrying a red purse when you’re wearing a red shirt or shoes with a black suit will help you stand out and enhance your professionalism. Avoid briefcases unless they apply to the job, and you actually have something important for the interview in them. It will look like you’re trying too hard otherwise.

Also, make sure to wear your hair out of your face. You don’t need to put it in a slicked — back tight bun, but at least clip back the front pieces so again, they can see your face.

Make sure your shoes match your belt. I learned that in the seventh grade and it stayed with me. Failing to do so looks tacky and overall, will draw bad attention to your outfit in any situation. For your coat, make sure to be dressy no matter what you’re wearing underneath. Trench coats with bold prints and houndstooth jackets were extremely popular this past winter. For the summer you can try a shorter belted jacket. Victoria’s Secret carries an upscale selection of jackets starting at $99, and can be purchased at www.victoriassecret.com.

Yes, the most important part of your interview is the interview, but blending in will do you no good. If you’re going to stand out, why not start right from the beginning? So, good luck, dress for success and happy job hunting.
