PR club increasing in popularity By Allison Kowalski With enthusiastic members and innovative ideas, The College at Brockport Public Relations (PR) Club is progressively making itself known on campus. Since last year, there has been a high increase in members, as well as the number of activities and events the club hosts and attends each semester. The PR club had an active yet small group of members during the 2006-07 academic year, but they have significantly grown to more than 30 members this year. There is a diverse range of majors and a good mix of freshmen to seniors in the club. Public relations is two-way communication between a client and organization who work together to set, establish, execute and evaluate goals and plans. Since public relations is a diverse field, the PR club provides an excellent opportunity for people with different skills to work with the club. Public speaking, writing, editing, promoting, event planning, financing and research are all interconnected, Justin Oliver, treasurer of the PR club, said. Planning is a favorite in the PR club, he said. “There something about taking [an idea] and letting it grow,” Oliver said. Publicity for the PR club helped increase its membership this year compared to last year. “I think it’s been the exposure,” Oliver said. The PR club started planning recruitment ideas beginning in the Spring 2007 semester. One of the biggest recruitment events was at Welcome Weekend tables last August, where incoming freshmen and transfer students check out clubs, organizations and services Brockport offers. The PR club had free giveaways and raffle tickets, as well as information about the club. Night in Tuttle, both in the fall and spring semester, was an additional opportunity for large recruitment exposure for the club. Additionally, going right to the students in communication department classes was a way to get the message about the PR club out there. Specifically, PR club members went into the Principles of Communication class, a required class for all communication students, to speak about the club, its purposes and events it holds. “My major is journalism and I am doing a concentration in public relations,” Durfee said. “It will give me experience in the long run. It’s a great club.” The PR club also focused on club bonding and getting-to-know-each-other events in the fall semester. Besides recruitment events, the club focused on its membership relations. As a group, they volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and participated in a Diabetes walk this past October, raising more than $900. During the spring semester, the PR club will focus on events that involve the Brockport community, Oliver said. True to its word, the PR club jumped right into the new semester hosting an Activities Fair where Brockport clubs provided information for potential members. Having the fair in the Union during the day reached out to a new crop of students in a different area on campus. Currently, the PR club will host the Buffalo Sabres Basketball Alumni Game Wednesday, April 2. Sabres alumni will be playing basketball against favorite Brockport faculty and staff. The proceeds will go to Relay for Life, another event in which the PR club is extremely and heavily involved. Active members and exciting events make the PR club as strong as it is today. The PR club meets Thursdays at 4:45 p.m. in B116 of the Seymour College Union. |
