Ask not what The College at Brockport can do for you, but what you can do for The College at Brockport. As college students, we are given the right and responsibility to make the decision of who is going to represent us.

Upcoming Brockport Student Government elections for president, vice president, treasurer, and on and off-campus representatives begin April 7.

While some believe that one vote cannot make a difference, it truly can.

Ask yourself if you were satisfied with the way your money was handled. $240,000 of the $1.3 million dollar mandatory fee account is put toward programming in the beginning of the year. This year, funds were clearly handled poorly as the BSG Board of Directors transferred the remaining balances of the gallery programming, lectures and student services’ accounts to programming which contributes to funding on-campus entertainment activities.

Think about the input you really had in choosing Wanda Sykes or Flo Rida coming to Brockport. Choosing candidates who represent what you want will better your college experience. This will enable you to have a say in what concerts you see, the events you’re invited to be a part of, and services that are provided for you.

Pay attention to the level of professionalism in each candidate and not just if you’re friends with them. Look at what they find to be the problems and what needs to be done, and see if you agree. You don’t have to know politics to know what you want in someone who represents you. You can be a part of the decision-making process by simply voting.

The fact that we even have the opportunity to vote is to be commended, as some colleges don’t have student governments. Our student government directly affects the students, so it’s important that the students be involved. Brockport students were given a voice, and they can use it by voting.

The news section of this week’s Stylus has information on each candidate. Facebook also has campaigning groups for each set of candidates. Kyle Amendola, BSG’s treasurer, will be running for president alongside Bill Keating, current off-campus representative, for vice president uncontested, but the treasurer position is up in the air.

Current Vice President Randall Franklin and off-campus representative Lindsay Geyer are both running for the position.

Debates began April 1 and continue at 9:15 p.m. April 2 in Trax, and at 6:15 p.m. April 3 in Brockway dining hall. Voting will be from April 7 to April 8. Freshmen and sophomores can vote in Brockway. Juniors and seniors may vote in Harrison dining hall, and off-campus students may vote in the Seymour College Union.

You can choose someone to represent you, but you have to allow that candidate to have your vote first. It doesn’t take more than 60 seconds to influence your college career. Vote.
