Tuesday, March 25 marked the beginning of change within Brockport Student Government, as the candidates for the ’08-’09 administration began campaigning. Kyle Amendola, the current BSG Treasurer, and Darnell Pierce, the incumbent, have moved forward for their bid to claim the student-elected seat for president next year.
As a graduate student, Pierce served as President for the past year, and is running with current Academic Council Representative Michelle Ford. Collectively, the duo has five years of combined experience within BSG.
“We want to be as interactive as possible to make the rest of this year and all of next year a blast by serving you to the fullest and doing what you want,” a Facebook event for the duo read.
Amendola will be joining the campaign with Bill Keating, an off-campus representative and member of the Board of Directors. Campaigning began early for the duo, with online advertising, table fliers and posters posted by noon the first day of campaigning. Their slogan, “Next year will be better,” promises students radical, organized change in BSG, citing an open-door policy and better promotions.
The treasurer position will be up for grabs between Juniors Lindsay Geyer and Randall Franklin.
“I hope to improve school spirit, spreading more green and gold to everyone,” a statement from Geyer said. “If elected, I will go beyond my duties as treasurer, and be an active part of the programs and services that we as a student body look to BSG for.”
Franklin is the current Vice President of the organization, looking to be re-elected into the treasurer position.
“I want to make sure students see the programming and get their money’s worth,” Franklin said. “People who know me, know my capabilities.”
On and off-campus representatives are running for open seats, with three on-campus positions available, and five off-campus positions available.
Freshmen Paul Giglio and Clayton Santic are running for the on-campus positions. Both have been actively involved on campus in their first year on campus and would enjoy becoming a member of the student government.
Jeff Scanzuso, Nate Casillo and Rich Jebo are all seeking the uncontested off-campus seats. Jebo has previously been an off-campus representative, in the ’06-’07 academic year, bringing in fresh ideas and a prior record with the Board of Directors.
Scanzuso and Casillo have not been involved with BSG before, but state their knowledge on how to accurately represent students is a pivotal part of this election.
“A lot of people voice their concerns, but never see anything come of it,” Casillo said.
As the campaign week progressed, numerous posters, table tents and facebook groups began surfacing on bulletin boards and in the dining halls. Slogans such as “BSG is important to me, Vote Lindsay,” and “Pierce and Ford: Does a [student] body good.”
Voting begins April 7, ending the next day, April 8.
Residents in the upper quad may vote in Harrison Hall, while students in the lower quad may make their decision at Brockway Hall. Off-campus and commuter students may choose their representatives in the Union.
