Eagles' NCAA flight ends in second round The miracle run for the College at Brockport women’s basketball team ended Sunday as the Golden Eagles fell to the William Smith Herons by a final score of 78-73 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tournament. Brockport defeated the Emmanuel Saints from Boston in the first round by a final score of 68-64, earning the school’s first Women’s Basketball NCAA tournament win. Although it is the end of the Golden Eagles’ record-breaking season, Brockport finished with a final record of 25-5 overall, the most wins in school history. The Eagles’ first-round victoy was led by Brenlyn Campbell, who shot 14-19 inside the paint and ended the game with 32 points. Ashley Broadhurst came up big, scoring 18 points. A big story during the game, however, was Courtney Hines, who left the game in the first half with four minutes remaining, but came back and scored 10 points in the victory, along with six rebounds and four assists. The Golden Eagles led by 10 at halftime, reducing the Saints from Emmanuel to only 18 percent field goal percentage in the first half. Emmanuel came back in the second half, however, but key steals from Hines and rebounds by Molly Brewer and Campbell sealed the win for the Golden Eagles. After a campus-wide power outage postponed the game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8, the Golden Eagles took the court again Sunday at noon for their second-round game against William Smith. The high scorer for Brockport was Broadhurst, who went 10-10 from the free throw line, and scored a total of 30 points. Also scoring high in the game was Campbell, who scored 21 points, and Hines, who scored 14. The issue in the game late for Brockport was foul trouble, as four of the five starters fouled out. Kiomi Matthews, Christine Princehorn, Campbell and Hines all fouled out with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The women’s team started off the year with an overtime loss to Albion in the Muskingham tournament, but then won 21 of their next 24 to clinch the regular season SUNYAC championship and host the tournament in Tuttle North. The women won the SUNYAC Championship, defeating Buffalo State in the quarterfinals, New Paltz in the semis, and Cortland in the finals. This earned the women’s team their first NCAA tournament bid since 2004, and as was their custom during the regular season, they fought until the end. |
