Bradshaw wins one more All-American honor Shaheim Bradshaw finished his final history-making season as a wrestler for the College at Brockport wrestling team the same way he did in first three seasons: with All-American honors. Bradshaw won his final five matches at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship after dropping his first match to claim third place in the 165-pound weight class, climaxing his career with a 7-5 win over North Central College’s Ben Youel. The double-elimination tournament format in use at Cedar Rapids, Iowa allowed Bradshaw, who was seeded eighth, to bounce back from an early setback. Bradshaw fell into the consolation bracket following a tight battle with Justin Bonitatas from the College of New Jersey that ended in a 5-4 loss and an injury. With elimination only one loss away, Bradshaw responded with a string of victories. He dominated Jason Wozniak from Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Patrick Nagel before pinning Justin Hanson from Wartburg College. With the wins, the only thing between Bradshaw and the third-place match was Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Tim Palmer, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Brockport’s All-American outworked his overrated opponent to win 7-2. Eric VanPatten had the opposite result at the tournament. Wrestling in the 174-pound weight class as the fourth seed, VanPatten won his first-round match, a 4-2 decision over George Lynaugh from Augsburg College. VanPatten moved on to face fifth-seed Brandon MacWhinnie. The battler from Stevens Institute emerged as the victor by a 3-2 margin, sending VanPatten to the consolation bracket. VanPatten’s final match of the season was against second-seeded Eric Bath from Wisconsin-Stevens Points. Bath was able to pin VanPatten en route to a fifth-place finish. |
