Franklin impeachment hearing set

The hearing for BSG Vice President Randall Franklin has been set. Student Court has decided to set the hearing at 3 p.m. March 26 in Union room 187.

Franklin is facing impeachment after a Feb. 1 board meeting where the impeachment was added to the agenda. Cultural Committee Representative Rebecca Newberry brought up the five charges for Franklin.

The board met in executive session to discuss the matters against Franklin, deciding to send to Student Court only one of the five charges.

Any officer of BSG is open to impeachment, brought about by another member, if found guilty of malfeasance, violation of the constitution or bylaws, or for conviction of a felony while in, or waiting to take office. The court will hear the case and decide if Franklin is guilty or not guilty.

If the defendant is found guilty, he will be immediately dismissed from office and will forfeit all rights and privileges. A vote of impeachment will strip the impeached member of BSG membership, as well as quell the chances of running for office in the future.

The infraction that Franklin is facing stems from unpaid fees for conference hotel stays and cell phone overage charges.

“I was elected to serve and represent the students,” Franklin said in an earlier interview. “I love BSG and my job as vice president. I believe that this is all a misunderstanding and hope that not only the students understand that, but also BSG representatives and personnel.”

In a letter to the board, Newberry wrote that Franklin’s actions have interrupted business and “poorly served the students at The College of Brockport.”

“Franklin has represented Brockport Student Government in an unprofessional and irresponsible manner,” she wrote.

In the case of impeachment, Franklin would lose his position as Vice President, as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Justin Oliver has been voted Pro Tem in the case that the Vice President cannot fulfill his responsibilities.
