Brockport Television Club airs weekly shows Brockport Television, a Brockport club on the rise, is seeking to expand its membership as it makes adjustments to the club. It is divided into two shows: “Brockport Campus News” and “Almost Television.” The club is written, produced and directed by students. The “Brockport Campus News” (BCN), a BTV production, is now aired live Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. on channel 19. This new feature has successfully been run three times. “I've really seen this club grow in ways I couldn't fathom from when I first got involved,” said Amanda Hartman, the news director for BCN. BCN runs regularly on campus channel 12 at the start of every hour. It is like an actual news show, complete with campus sports and campus news presented by anchors. Spencer Crosby, a junior broadcasting major at Brockport, is the president of the club. He has been involved with BTV since his freshman year, when Crosby said he “took to it like a fish to water.” Another part of BTV, Almost Television (ATV) is an hour-long comedy show featuring various skits and guest presenters. Newer episodes run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. Re-runs of the show follow until 12 a.m. The content of the skits include anything the students can come up with. Musical guests such as Dana Marzovilla and Mr. Phelps of Circuit and Phelps have performed on the show. Two hosts also introduce and comment on the skits. The content of the show is self-censored by the students. “My favorite skit is the one I filmed with Vinnie Carbone and Miles Elijah Gamble,” Crosby said. “It was called BTV Reality Freestyles, where they went around and did raps about the campus. It was a blast to shoot.” The club recently appointed Jessica O’Brien as the director of ATV. “Hopefully this will light a fire under their butts,” Crosby said of the little membership in that section. The club holds two regular meetings for each of its sections. BCN’s meetings are Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. in the television studios, in the basement of Edwards Hall. ATV’s meetings are 8:30 p.m. Thursdays in the same location. By making these adjustments the club is hoping to increase viewership and membership. “Some people are faithful watchers,” Crosby said. “While others say, ‘we have a television show?’” BTV has existed as a club in various forms for more than 20 years. It hasn’t been until the last six years that it took the form it has today. The club’s advisor, BTV’s Services Coordinator Jim Bareis, helps out the student-run club. “[Bareis] makes the world go round for the club,” Crosby said. “He really ties up loose ends.” “The students put hours and hours of effort into this show every week, and it pays off every time,” Hartman said. “The club is really shaping up to be the best source of news for students on and off campus.” (Ed. Note — nice try, Hartman) BTV is always recruiting new members and is planning to air the show during dinner to raise viewership. |
