The best and most creative pieces of the semester are currently on display in the Gallery of the Tower Fine Arts Building. The creators of these magnificent pieces are art professors and lecturers in the art department. No two pieces are alike.

The Department of Art Faculty Exhibition opened Wednesday, March 5 to the Brockport community.

Walking around the exhibit, viewers will see there are a variety of mediums used to create the artwork. Japanese paper, inkjet, men’s clothing, sculpture material and wood are used to produce a variety of art pieces that reflect the artists’ personalities and flavors.

One of the biggest sculptures is “Martyr 2,” by Jennifer Hecker. It shows a tree of cream-white eggshells that are held together by fine wire. At the top of the tree sits a woman with her arms stretched out. It is as if she is walking, or dancing, on eggshells.

“Global Warming III,” by Tim Massey, is one of the most provocative pieces in the entire exhibit. In the piece, Massey shows how global warming has a negative effect on the environment and its animals. Dead, faded pollen shadows a man’s face — the dead pollen looks like jail bars, therefore imprisoning the man in the foreground.

A birdhouse hosts a skeletal bird at its top. In the birdhouse openings, there are black outlines and shadows of birds. Because of global warming, everything ranging from birds to plants is dead.

In the exhibit, there is a similar replica of Vermeer’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring.” “Girl With a Pearl Earring (After Vermeer),” by Kurt Treeby, is a rug design of the original 17th century piece. Treeby uses well-known paintings, like Vermeer’s, and transforms them into forms of lower art, like a rug, which is always walked upon. The strands of acrylic yarn Treeby uses are vivid and match the outline and form of the original “Girl With a Pearl Earring.”

There are dozens of other paintings, drawings and sculptures sitting in the Tower Gallery. All of the pieces are truly unique and could have a viewer starring at them for a long time.

The Department of Art Faculty Exhibition will continue until Sunday, March 30. Tower Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit is truly one of the best because it shows the creativity and talent of The College at Brockport’s art department.
