Legends behind the ring
By Allison Kowalski
LIFESTYLES EDITOR

Though students with Irish descent wear Claddagh rings on their fingers, they may not know the significance behind the ring or that there are certain ways to wear it.

The traditional setting of the ring is two hands holding a heart wearing a crown. The hands mean friendship, heart is love and the crown is loyalty. Traditionally, the ring can be worn as a friendship or wedding ring.

There are four ways to wear the Claddagh ring:

1. When the point of the heart is facing outward on the right finger, the wearer is single and looking.

2. When the point of the heart is inward on the right finger, the wearer is in a relationship or someone has captured his or her heart.

3. When the heart point is outward on the left finger, the wearer is engaged.

4. When the heart point is inward on the left finger, the wearer is married.
