Finance Club attends third annual RITC By Christopher Frate The Brockport Finance club attended their third consecutive Rotman International competition this past weekend. The Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) is an annual sales and trading event that is hosted in Toronto, Canada by the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. It is a three-day event, which began Feb. 21, and continued until Feb. 23. Members of the team were able to compete in four different heats. These heats included the BP Commodities, the Open Outcry, the Sales & Trader and the Quantitative Outcry. Each session of the competition allowed team members to buy and sell future contracts via an outcry system or multiple securities on an electronic market, in an attempt to generate the most profit. They were able to put their trading, analytical and communication skills to the test. Two members of the Brockport Finance Club finished in the top 10 in a few of the heats, including a sturdy second-place finish by the President of the club, Silvina Valcheva. The Finance Club trained for the event for approximately one-and-a-half months before the actual competition. Led by finance teacher Dr. Singh, the members of the club have been practicing using software from the Rotman Trading Lab, buying and selling securities. A total of 34 teams were present at the competition. Some of the participating schools presented strong competition, and included a lineup of York, Ohio State University, Dublin City University and Oklahoma State University. When the teams arrived in Toronto, they were able to attend a social sponsored by British Petroleum. The social allowed members of each team to mingle with one another, which opened up new opportunities for friendship and communication. The club is looking forward to its involvement in the competition next time it is hosted. It has proven an exceptional way to show other schools the potential and capabilities of Brockport students and our Finance Club. |
