Ashley Broadhurst capped the final regular season game of her career with a game-winning jump shot, with only 12 seconds left against the Geneseo Knights, sending her teammates onto the floor in celebration and Geneseo fans out of the arena in shock.

It wasn’t a game the College at Brockport women’s basketball team had to win, but Broadhurst said it was a perfect way to get ready for the playoffs.

“It brings a new level of energy to SUNYACS,” said Broadhurst of the game’s exciting conclusion. “We’re in a real good place now.”

The Golden Eagles started their postseason with a matchup with Buffalo State, the eighth-place team in the SUNYAC.

With a win, Brockport will move on to host the final rounds of the SUNYAC tournament Friday and Saturday at Tuttle North Gymnasium. A loss will bring Brockport to the mercy of the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

The Golden Eagles almost lost their momentum on the final possession, as the Knights’ game-ending shot from next to the hoop went just too far.

Geneseo took the lead with 22 seconds left on a lay-up, but Broadhurst drove down the court before pulling up and nailing her shot.

“I wanted to get a good shot or at least get fouled,” Broadhurst said of her last possesion. “I guess I got a good shot.”

Broadhurst scored Brockport’s last six points, including four free throws that turned a two-point deficit into a two-point lead.

Free throws helped decide the tight battle, as Brockport went 22-24 from the line compared Geneseo’s 14-21 performance at the charity stripe.

Courtney Hines drained all seven of her free throw attempts before fouling out with less than a minute left. She finished with 17 points.

Brockport nearly pulled away with the game in the second half, as a 10-0 run gave the Golden Eagles a 51-46 lead. The Knights didn’t score for more than nine minutes during the second half.

The teams battled throughout the second half after being tied at half time.
