'It's anyone's conference' Golden Eagles engaged in tight battle for SUNYAC women's basketball supremacy By Jim Krencik Brockport women’s basketball coach Michele Carron has seen a lot in her tenure on the Golden Eagles’ bench, and when she looks at the competition for this season’s SUNYAC title, she said she sees a well-rounded field. “It’s anyone’s conference,” Carron said after the Golden Eagles defeated Oswego Jan. 18 “We have a lot of parity in the SUNYAC.” This year, “anyone” could easily be Brockport, even though the Golden Eagles were on the losing-end of a down-to-the-wire conference game with the Potsdam Bears in the first game of their latest road-trip. Brockport bounced back from the loss with an overwhleming team-effort against the Plattsburgh Cardinals Jan. 26. Brenlyn Campbell burst out offensively against Plattsburgh, scoring 21 points. Campbell’s second-highest point production of the season lead the Golden Eagles’ attack, with Kim Schon, Whitney Smith and Ashley Broadhurst each scoring in double-digits in the win. While the offense has been connecting from multiple sources, Carron said the biggest improvements have been defensive. “We’ve gotten better at getting back on defense,” Carron said. “We are preventing easy shots and communicating with one another.” Five of the remaining eight games on Brockport’s schedule are on the road, but the most-important battle of regular season will be played in Tuttle North Arena. The Cortland Red Dragons, current SUNYAC leaders and the last unbeaten team in conference play, come to Brockport Feb. 5 for the first part of a basketball doubleheader. Although the conference is wide-open, the winner of that night’s contest will be in prime position to be the host of the SUNYAC playoffs. |
