Schumer promotes book at Lift Bridge To promote his new novel, New York state Senator Charles Schumer visited Lift Bridge Book Shop on Main Street for a one hour book-signing session on Jan. 27. Schumer arrived at Lift Bridge at about 12:30 p.m. to meet a line of customers that wound halfway around the shop. After expressing his gratitude “to be in beautiful Brockport” to shop co-owners Archie and Pat Kutz, Schumer explained the basic premise of his new book, Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class Majority One Family at a Time.
It explores the story of a mythical but typical middle-class American family, the group that Schumer seeks to benefit the most through his actions in the Senate. He understands that “the world is changing” and that Americans “need a government that’s helpful to them.” This book outlines Schumer’s 11 part plan to solve the crisis that everyday citizens are facing that he believes the government can solve. Schumer tried to explain his appeal to the majority of the American population through the fictional “Bailey” family. “The Baileys really dislike the ENRON executives, who stole,” Schumer elaborated. “But they dislike more the people who burn the flag. “I once sat down and said, ‘I have to write an article about what the Democratic Party should stand for.’ It turned into
this book.” A few students stopped in to get the commemorative book signed and take the opportunity to speak with the senator. Among them were Bill Sachman, Ryan McPherson and Pat Slage. “Once I saw the headline on Lift Bridge I knew I had to get in line because I admire this man,” Sachman said. “For one thing, he started off in politics at a very young age and I admire that. It takes a lot to be a politician; you have to be really thick-skinned. He had a lot of values that I stand for as well, and he really represents our state very well in the Senate.” In response to Schumer’s comments, McPherson added, “You can tell he really cares about the middle-class person and he’s got a lot of great ideas that he’s putting forth through his book and I was really excited to see that.” Owner Archie Kutz was equally excited. “We really got him to come in by luck. This isn’t one of the typical stops in a book promotion like this.” The store sold more than 30 copies of the story due to the event. “I hope you’ll all enjoy the book!” Schumer told the crowd. |
