Brockport overcomes Oneonta on the road, secures second seed in SUNYAC Tournament By Nicholas Serrata
The Golden Eagles beat the Oneonta Red Dragons 18-12 on Saturday, April 28 in an epic State University of New York Athletic Conference game. “It was a great win that secures our second place seeding in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament this weekend,” said coach Traci Lian. Freshman Lexie Goodhart battled her way through the Oneonta defense and found senior Courtney Dean to score on goaltender Eileen O’Toole at 2:23. From that point on, Brockport swung in five unchallenged goals against the Red Dragons. It wasn’t until Oneonta’s Deanna Paquette saw a weak spot on Ashley Taylor that they landed a goal. While the Golden Eagles scored two goals, Oneonta scored four unanswered goals. Brockport netted two more goals, taking a 10-5 lead at halftime. “We came out strong against Oneonta, scoring the first six goals,” Lian said. After that the closest we allowed [them] to get to us was four goals. Our team defense played great and was able to slow down their fastbreak offense.” An answer was found by Goodhart who unleashed a goal against the Red Dragons. Brockport and Oneonta went back and forth converting scoring opportunities in the second half. Julia Decker finished off the Red Dragons scoring with 0:56 left of the game. “On the offensive end kept the scoring spread with five different players scoring three or more goals,” Lian said. “We were able to pick apart their zone defense to hit the open cutters in the middle.” Taylor stopped 12 shots as O’Toole made eight saves. Jenny Baccile finished with four goals, while Goodhart, Carrie Kane, Decker and Dean each had a hat trick. Freshman Marlise Piraino and junior Kim Winslow had a goal each. Brockport had 23 turnovers. Brockport took a road trip down to SUNY Cortland (11-3, SUNYAC 6-0) on April 24 at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex where they lost to the Red Dragons by a score of 16-4. “Cortland is ranked No. 12 in Division III and is a very tough opponent,” Lian said. “We made a lot of mental mistakes in the game and did not play to the best of our ability. Hopefully, we will be able to face them again in the conference tournament and get a chance to redeem ourselves.”
Goodhart found Baccile, who scored the first goal after 41 seconds of play. The Dragons responded with eight unchallenged goals. Kane wasn’t ready to give up as she zoomed around the powerful defense to set up a connection with Goodhart, who unleashed her 28th goal of the season on Cortland’s goaltender Deanne Abell. Before the half ended, Cortland netted another goal and took a commanding 9-2 lead. Cortland wasn’t done yet. The Red Dragons went on without giving any mercy to Brockport as they scored five more unchallenged goals. Then Baccile squeezed one goal, but the Red Dragons pulled two more in before Baccile scored the final goal, wrapping up the score, 16-4 for Oneonta. Abell recorded nine saves while Taylor finished with six. Baccile recorded another hat trick while Goodhart had a goal. Goodhart and Kane shared an assist each. Rain and lightning suspended Brockport’s game against Buffalo State on Thursday, April 26. Less than 10 minutes into the first half, the Bengals took a 3-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. Steady rain with multiple lightning strikes in the area made the field unplayable. This game was to be made up Tuesday, May 1 at a neutral site and a time to be determined. Brockport already secured the second place in the conference behind Cortland. The Red Dragons will host the SUNYAC Tournament. Cortland will go up against the fourth seeded Oneonta, while Brockport will face Geneseo, No. 3 seed, Friday, May 4. Provided the Golden Eagles win, they will advance to the championship game, which will be played Saturday. |
